History of the Frost Center


herb dershem Herb Dershem, Director of Office of Institutional Research
Dr. Dershem has taught at Hope College since 1969, five years before the department of computer science was established in 1974, and served as the department's chair from 1975 through 2003. In addition to teaching and helping develop the program's curriculum, he played a significant role in shaping the department's practice of involving students in original, collaborative research projects with members of the faculty. He is an avid tennis player who devotes much of his free time to community organizations including Kids Hope USA.  Herb can be reached at
Milly Hudgins

Milly Hudgins, Frost Center Operations Director
Milly recently returned to Holland and to the Frost Center as its Operations Director.  The Virginia native and James Madison University graduate has worked in Communications and Marketing for WVEC-TV, Busch Gardens, the Philadelphia Zoo and most recently as the Marketing Director for Village Bank in the Richmond, Va. area.  During her previous tenure with Hope College, Milly worked in the Frost Center as well as the Phelps Scholars Program. Julie Ornee

Julie Ornee, Research Associate
Julie Ornee received her B.A. in psychology and sociology from Hope in 2006. Upon graduation, she joined the Peace Corps and served two years in Macedonia as a Youth Community Development Volunteer. In 2011 Julie received her M.S. in Sociology and Community and Economic Development from the Stevenson Center at Illinois State University.  Before coming to the Frost Center, she worked as the Community Impact Manager at the United Way of McLean County in Bloomington, Illinois. Laurie Smith Laurie Smith, Research Associate
Laurie earned her Bachelor of Science in Business from Davenport University and a Master of Management degree from Aquinas College. Before coming to the Frost Center, she worked as an   Educational Data Consultant for the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, in Holland, MI for thirteen years where she was the instructional lead for their data warehouse. She was also one of ten regional level experts for a state program on Formative Assessment called FAME – Formative Assessment for Michigan Educators. Affiliated Faculty

The Frost Center provides financial and operational support for many faculty research projects and over the years has worked with nearly every office and academic department on Hope's campus.
