Hope College's popular contribution to Holland's annual Tulip Time festival continues with organ recitals on Wednesday-Saturday, May 5-8, in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The performances will take place every half hour, with the first each day starting at 10 a.m. and the last performance beginning at 1:30 p.m. The 20-minute recitals will feature a variety of composers covering the 17th century through the present.
The recitals are organized by Hope faculty members Dr. Huw Lewis and Linda Strouf, both of whom are performing.
Lewis was born in Wales and educated at the Royal College of Music in London, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and the University of Michigan. Before coming to Hope, Lewis spent 16 years in the Detroit area, where he was director of music at St. John's Episcopal Church, founder/director of the St. John's Bach Society, and choir director at Temple Israel, in West Bloomfield.Strouf holds a master's degree in organ from the University of Wyoming and is a 1984 Hope College graduate. She also serves as the college's fine arts division recruiting coordinator.
Other organists include: Rob Abbott, a 1997 Hope graduate who is director of liturgical music and parish organist of the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak; Sara Bolkema, a member of the college's graduating Class of 2004 from Flushing; Elizabeth Claar of Holland, who has recently completed coursework for a doctoral of musical arts in organ performance at the University of Michigan; Susan De Kam, a 2002 Hope graduate who is music director at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea and pursuing a master's in organ performance at the University of Michigan; Heidi Dykema, a member of the college's graduating Class of 2004 from Grand Rapids; Peter Kurdziel, a 1996 Hope graduate who is music director for the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception and the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in Illinois; Patricia Pratt, a 1981 Hope graduate who was formerly director of music ministries at Resurrection Reformed Church in Flint and now, with her pastor husband, serves at Christ Community Church of Palos Heights in Illinois; Abbie Rockwood, a current Hope student from North Muskegon; Krista Shinew, a 2001 Hope graduate serving as an adjunct member of the music faculty at Duquesne University while pursuing a doctorate in organ performance at West Virginia University; and Marilyn van der Velde, who was the organist at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor for 30 years and for 10 years was the organist for the concerts presented by The University of Michigan Choral Union.
Dimnent Memorial Chapel is located on College Avenue at 12th Street.
