Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy and systematic theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, will present “Catholic and Reformed Ecumenism: Basis, Boundaries, and Benefits,” on Wednesday, March 5, at 4:30 p.m. at Hope College in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Echeverria will discuss the idea of “Receptive Ecumenism,” the principle that ecumenical dialogue is not just exchanging ideas, but involves learning from, or receiving of, each other’s gifts. Ecumenism, he notes, should be considered a “dialogue of love.”
Echeverria has been a member of the faculty at Sacred Heart Major Seminary since 2003. His publications include the books “Berkouwer and Catholicism, Disputed Questions,” “‘In the Beginning…’ A Theology of the Body,” “Dialogue of Love: Confessions of an Evangelical Catholic Ecumenist,” and “Slitting the Sycamore, Christ and Culture in the New Evangelization,” as well as numerous scholarly articles. He completed his undergraduate degree at Trinity College, and holds graduate degrees from the Free University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands and the University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome (Angelicum).
