Spring Opportunity for Academic Recovery (SOAR)
The Spring Opportunity for Academic Recovery (SOAR) program is a weekly advising and seminar program for first year students who earned less than a 2.30 GPA during the fall semester.
This program is required for any first-year student who is on academic probation (less than a 1.70 GPA). SOAR students are assigned an advisor and meet weekly with that advisor to develop academic skills, create an academic plan to track assignments and grades. In addition to weekly advising support, SOAR advisors will also reach out to SOAR student’s professors to gather information and feedback on their progress in each of their courses.

- Who Can Participate

- First-year students who received 1.7 GPA or below (in the fall semester) are required to participate
- First-year students who received a GPA between 1.7 and 2.3 (in the fall semester) are are invited to participate
- What Can You Expect
- As a SOAR student, you will receive weekly, one-on-one advising with an assigned SOAR advisor. Together, you will work on building academic skills, transitioning to college and accountability for coursework and class commitments. You will also attend a weekly workshop to learn about campus resources and develop your academic skills. Additionally, you and your advisor will receive periodic feedback from professors about your class progress and performance.
- Student Responsibilities

- Attend weekly SOAR advising meetings
- Attend weekly SOAR workshop for the first half of the semester
- Follow up on assigned tasks and goals
- Be honest in your self-reflection and have open communication with your SOAR advisor so they can best support you
- Be open minded and try new routines, habits, and practices to encourage change
- Take responsibility for your education (attend classes, complete assignments, utilize campus resources)
- SOAR Advisor Responsibilities

- Meet with students throughout the semester and summarize meetings (including goals, follow-up tasks and any areas of concern)
- Periodically reaching out to instructors for student's class progress and permformance
- Have open and honest communication with students
- Refer students to campus resources
- Continued professional development
- Commitment to FERPA rules and regulations
