Retirement Tips and Tools

How do you know if you will have enough to retire? Designed for the beginner to get useful tips, tools and some basic knowledge of retirement planning. You will be able to take these home with you and put them to use to help with planning for your future!

Building Your Resilience

Resilience is the mental strength that people call on in times of need to carry them through without falling apart. Anxiety over distressing circumstances can be reduced by teaching employees how to increase their resilience. It can help people recover from challenging experiences and assist with their growth and development.

Five to Thrive

Well-being is the experience of health, happiness, social connection, engagement and having a sense of purpose. Taking care of all aspects of your life with a total well-being plan can result in your ability to feel fulfilled each day. In this class we talk about these five areas of well-being and some guidelines to create and enriching path to each of them.

Universal Design at the Front Desk

Presenter: Reagan Chesnut
Using the principles of Universal Design in Learning, this presentation explores various ways of working towards an inclusive user experience from the front desk or administrative perspective. Measures such as self-description, accessible help documents and inclusive customer service practices help departments provide comprehensive support from the moment of engagement.

This presentation will outline Hope College’s records management policy and retention schedule system, give some guidance for how to track records retention and disposal, and share some ways in which you can ensure your department's work and perspective are represented in Hope's archives. It will also highlight the services the Joint Archives offers to Hope staff, faculty, students and members of the wider community.

How to Use Empathy to Define Problems with Design ThinkingDesign Thinking 1

Often, the people tasked with solving problems are not the same as those who are experiencing them. It is important that a good problem solving process starts with curiosity and empathy. Some are better than others at this, but very few do this systematically. We will provide tools that help you understand the complete experience of a particular problem.

Culture Matters: Foundations of Cultural Intelligence (CQ)CQ 1

In this session, participants will become familiar with cultural intelligence (CQ), recognize the relevance of cultural intelligence, be able to define “culture,” and consider cultural effectiveness in their own contexts. Participants interested in completing self-paced online pre-work prior to the session are invited to do so.

 This is one of a four-part series on CQ. It can be taken as a standalone session, but employees who attend all four sessions will earn a certificate for the Developing Cultural Intelligence®: Working Effectively Across Cultures™ Workshop. Medicare & Marketplace: When, How, and Should I?

Presenter: Stacy Segrist Kamphuis
This session will review the eligibility, requirements, penalties and comparisons of Marketplace (a.k.a., HealthCare.gov) for people under 65, as well as Medicare plan options. We’ll answer questions like:

  • Do I have to enroll in Medicare?
  • Should I keep working for insurance, or should I enroll in Medicare if I am still working?

We will keep it light and even throw in some humor to keep you awake. And we’ll bring stressballs for you, just in case!

Creating a Psychologically Safe Workspace

A lack of psychological safety at work has major business repercussions. When people don’t feel comfortable talking about initiatives that aren’t working, the organization isn’t equipped to prevent failure. When employees aren’t fully committed, the organization has lost an opportunity to leverage the strengths of all its talent. When managers and employees inauthentically support each other’s ideas in the name of being polite, they miss out on an opportunity to communicate with and learn from each other.

Know Your Numbers

Understanding health numbers for key indicators such as blood pressure and cholesterol can often help predict future and preventable health issues. This informative session will help you understand the five key numbers to be aware of and some preventative measure to take if your numbers are not within a healthy range.

A fun, story-based session on the liberal arts and why they matter. The informative session will help all employees understand the benefits of a liberal arts education like the one Hope offers our students.

LinkedIn is not like every social media platform. Nic and Shelbey will provide tips and best practices for your personal profile and share how to make the most of the platform.

Culture Making

Presenter: Josh Bishop
Come learn a different way to think about culture. Drawing on the book Culture Making by Andy Crouch, Josh will present five questions that serve as as a framework for engaging, evaluating, critiquing and creating cultural artifacts. A brief workshop session will encourage attendees to apply the five questions to elements of Hope’s culture.

How to Brainstorm and Evaluate Ideas with Design ThinkingDesign Thinking 2

Great solutions are a product of creatively developing many ideas and then thoughtfully evaluating those ideas using relevant criteria. Both are important, but too many teams don’t understand which activity to do when. This session will share tools and mindsets that help you do both well — and empower your team in the process!

CQ and Cultural Values: Mapping Cultural DiversityCQ 2

Whenever we are faced with unreasonably difficult people, our instinct is to react with frustration and irritation. That can be the ticket to destruction. It causes tension to build and proves to be a serious threat to the productivity and stability of the work environment. Understanding why people act out and how to manage diffuclt personality types can help create a more considerate, productive work environment.

Motivational Interviewing: A Communication Style

Presenter: Carrie Dattels
At its core, Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an approach that can be used in counseling to elicit behavior change by helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence. We will not be able to tackle that in 50 minutes, and you don't need to be a counselor to benefit from the foundations of MI. This session will focus on the MI spirit — a way of communicating while focusing on collaboration, evocation and autonomy so that others feel heard and understood.

In this course, we will define what mindfulness is and how it can be beneficial at work and home and even how it can benefit children. We'll explore seven effortless ways to be mindful every day. At the end of the session, we’ll spend some time reviewing how to meditate and then put it to practice.

Basics of Basecamp for Budding Beginners

Basecamp is a project management tool used by departments across campus to coordinate events, manage office tasks and plan for the future. Learn the basics of Basecamp and brainstorm ways to use the tool to add efficiency to your own work. Or, as Laura says, find a way to “be smarter than your brain.”

The User Manual of Me

Presenter: Kate Ralston
User manuals always say the same thing on the cover: Read entire manual before using this product. We often try to go back to a manual when problems arise, when issues could have been avoided if we had just read it first (like it told us to). The User Manual of Me is a tool that can be used within work teams (or friend groups! or families!) to encourage understanding of how each member works, thinks and processes before any issues arise within the group dynamic. In this presentation you will learn the basics of using the User Manual of Me concept effectively, as well as receiving a sample version to use within your own team.

How to Implement Change with Design ThinkingDesign Thinking 4

Presenter: Dave Van Wylen and Scott Travis
Implementing change requires logistical and relational skill. Clearly mapping out a realistic journey toward implementation is only half of the battle. The other half involves identifying those who are motivated for the change and others who are motivated to keep things the same. In this session we will give participants tools that help show appreciation to both parties (and everyone in-between) and build a journey towards implementation that increases the likelihood of success.
