Campus Space Planning

The campus master plan and campus space committee ensure that decisions regarding new construction, renovations and infrastructure improvements are made within a larger, long-term context.

Campus Master Plan

The campus master plan, like the strategic plan, is flexible and adaptable to meet changing conditions and priorities that come with time. The campus master plan also calls for the college to develop institutional plans and processes that inform and aid in the implementation and phasing of the master plan. The campus space committee, outlined below, exists for this purpose.

Goals

Academics
  • Promote a recognizable and cohesive “Learning Landscape” in which buildings, grounds and infrastructure support the educational mission of the college.
  • Create “academic crossroads” that promote cross-disciplinary and universally accessible collaboration hubs.
  • Position innovative and adaptable space and technology that enhances learning, research, scholarship and creativity for 3,000 to 3,300 students.
Christian Formation
  • Provide central space to support students’ Christian faith exploration, formation and vocation.
  • Improve Dimnent Chapel to be a more welcoming and universally accessible center for worship, gathering and learning.
Global Engagement
  • Improve buildings and grounds to serve the widest range of abilities, perspectives and partners.
  • Link academic and outreach programs with indoor and outdoor multicultural art.
  • Represent the college’s immigrant focus — past, present and future.
Community
  • Provide a campus “front door” and visitor-friendly parking.
  • Provide strong and welcoming edges on each side of the campus — with visible borders, clear entry points, consistent wayfinding, pedestrian-friendly circulation and universal design.
  • Enhance the quality and variety of on-campus residential communities.
  • Provide active indoor and outdoor year-round space for campus health and wellness.
Reputation & Influence
  • Showcase national academic centers of excellence, undergraduate scholarship and interdisciplinary research.
  • Provide competitive facilities for existing and emerging programs that generate demand.
  • Provide peer-leading student recreation and athletic team space.
Value
  • Develop only the land, facilities and parking necessary to steward Hope’s mission.
  • Repurpose facilities that return the investment to update or replace outdated facilities with those that can create income.
  • Identify the appropriate balance between facility access, parking proximity and multimodal movement.

Planning Principles

  • Distinguish: Strengthen the college's image and identity
  • Connect: Bring together people, programs and partners
  • Support: Create inclusive, safe and healthy spaces
  • Sustain: Promote resilient practices — economic, social and environmental

Campus Space Committee

All buildings and land are the property of the college as a whole and are assigned to meet overall priorities and needs. The campus space committee facilitates healthy decisions with all stakeholders and makes recommendations to administrative council.

Committee Purpose
  • Develop principles, policies and procedures for creating, allocating and reallocating space.
  • Review requests for space changes related to changing the current usage, reallocating vacated space and providing space for new programs or positions.
  • Ensure that all space usage aligns with the college’s strategic plan and master plan and is used in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Develop and implement guidelines and standards for how space is used.
  • Create and maintain a space inventory including dimensions, Facilities Inventory Classification Manual code, space’s mission, current occupants and steward(s) of the space’s mission.
  • Facilitate the process of a regular assessment of space usage on campus.
  • Investigate specific issues related to campus space as requested by the Administrative Council.
  • Funding decisions related to space usage are not under the scope of this committee’s work.
Members

The committee will consist of resource members from Physical Plant and CIT as well as representatives of various stakeholders on campus including faculty, students, the President’s Office, Alumni and Family Engagement, Admissions, Residential Life, Disability and Accessibility Resources, and the Registrar.
