Pre-Orientation Programs

We offer several pre-orientation programs to help students acclimate to Hope College. These optional programs have limited space.

Outdoor Pre-Orientation Backpacking Trip
August 17-23, 2019

Backpacking tripPut on your hiking boots and join us! We’ll head to the Manistee-Huron National Forest, where we’ll backpack along the Manistee River Trail and North Country Trails. Two groups will make the trip, each comprised of 8-10 incoming first-year students, two current Hope students and one professional outdoor leader.

The Itinerary

  • Saturday, August 17: Meet at Hope College and depart for trip
    Camp at Pigeon Creek campsite
  • Sunday, August 18: Travel to Manistee National Forest
    Camp in backcountry
  • Monday – Wednesday, August 19-21: Backpack
    Camp in backcountry
  • Thursday, August 22: Hike back
    Camp at Pigeon Creek campsite
  • Friday, August 23: Return to campus in time for residence hall check-in


Trip cost will be $450, with scholarship opportunities available. Cost includes all equipment (including backpacks), food and transportation. Equipment is provided through the Hope Outdoor Adventure Club gear inventory. Students will be responsible for personal clothing and items.

Step2Success (S2S) is a pre-orientation program that helps incoming students of color build connections and establish a sense of community, belonging and support during their transition to Hope College.

Summer Bridge Program

A two-week program designed for highly motivated incoming first-year students who are interested in building a strong foundation for their experience at Hope. The program is for  those who have received an invitation and have completed a program application.
